IT Careers and Certification Workshop

In today’s increasingly complex and highly-specialized economy, credentials are so important. As such an increasing number of candidates are looking to improve their skillsets through certification.

When it comes to Information Technology (IT), there is a high degree of mental ability needed for the job; not just for problem solving but also for stress management. Adding to these most IT departments run on specific types of technologies, for example Microsoft, Linux or a combination. Having teams that have the necessary skills to maintain these technologies can be invaluable to any organisation.

According to the CIA world fact book and Stats SA, South Africa is ranked 170 out of 200 countries, with 25.5% of the population unemployed. The use of certification courses can enable learners to gain competence in the use of vendor specific equipment and software, creating more employment opportunities while up skilling the population.

The 2012 Information Economy Report shows that, South Africa software spending represents 12% of the total IT spending, but accounts for 47% of the ICT industry employment. The report highlights the demand for skills in the Application Development and mobile computing sectors and suggest that software exports are an untapped market in South Africa.

Aspiring IT professionals frequently ask questions like “How can I pursue an IT Career?” “How do I decide on what IT career to pursue?” and “How will I get an IT Job?” To help answer these questions, The Durban University of Technology and the DUT AppFactory & the Department of Information Technology in conjunction with its partners are hosting an IT Careers and Certification workshop as follows:
